NE Wisconsin
During a significant rain event, a residential fuel oil tank failed underground causing the released fuel oil to migrate to the surface and flow downgradient through several neighbors' yards toward a storm sewer grate which ultimately discharged to a major river in WI. VER staff was able to contain the spill on the surface and prevent storm sewer impacts. Significant vegetative burn resulted where fuel oil flowed over the ground. VER worked with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to excavate the impacted soil, collected soil analytical samples, and restored the location to pre-spill conditions. All waste was disposed of at the appropriate disposal facilities.
NE Wisconsin
A bulk above-ground storage tank (AST) was overfilled at a facility.
The AST discharged out the tank vent, onto the facility roof, through the downspouts from the roof, and into the underground storm sewers, where it ultimately discharged to the site's stormwater pond. Hard boom absorbents and vacuum trucks were used to contain and remove the spilled material from the pond and it was restored to pre-spill conditions. All waste was disposed of at the appropriate disposal facilities.
East Central Wisconsin
A Gaylord box of synthetic oil failed during transport via a semi. Upon arrival at its destination, the oil spilled inside the trailer and when the trailer was opened, migrated across the facility parking lot in the snow and ice toward a storm sewer grate that discharged to a major river located less than 500 feet from the spill location. VER staff contained the spill, used absorbents to collect the spilled oil, cleaned the lot and trailer, and returned the facility and trailer to pre-spill conditions. All waste was disposed of at the appropriate disposal facilities.
East Central Wisconsin
A snow squall with 60+ mph winds resulted in whey product being rotated out of a large open-top AST. As a result, the product spilled out all over the facility building and the ground nearby. VER staff used a vacuum truck and pressure washers to clean the AST, ground and building to pre-spill conditions. All waste was disposed of at the appropriate disposal facilities.
